At very short notice we decided to go to London this Saturday. I wondered whether the cheapest advance tickets would still be available at 21.00 today (Thursday). I went on to the Southern website and got 2 each way for £4 return (it would have been £6 without our railcards). So if you want to go cheaply to London and you live on or near the coast, try the website first even if you are close to your planned day of travel.
Best of luck and sorry to those living in the north of Sussex who do not get the chance to buy these tickets.
