I wondered whether the cheapest advance tickets would still be available at 21.00 today (Thursday). I went on to the Southern website and got 2 each way for £4 return (it would have been £6 without our railcards). The tickets can only be purchased on-line at least 7 days in advance and cost £10 for one of £20 for up to 4. The ticket is valid after 10am on Monday to Fridays on Southern trains only and cannot be used on trains leaving London or Croydon between 16.30 and 19.30. On Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays there are no time restrictions. The ticket is good value for longer journeys on Southern especially and if shopping is your goal, there are centres close to stations served by Southern trains. For example, West Quay, Southampton - 10 minutes walk or a free bus; Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth Harbour - 5 minutes walk; Ashford Designer Centre, 10 miutes walk from Ashford International; Westfield, London, 5 minutes walk from Shepherds Bush station and Milton Keynes 10 minutes walk from Milton Keynes Central. I wondered whether this was too good to be true but after a bit of searching I bought a return from Chichester to London for tomorrow for £1, another for next Wednesday for £1 and again for next Saturday for two for £2, my final purchase also for two on an August Saturday was even less at £1.40.
